There’s plenty of fun and learning to be had in the first month of the year. From social justice workshops to a night of jazz and art exploration, here are five can’t-miss activities in January.

Make new friends and discover new joys

The Spring Activities Fair is a reminder that it's not too late to join a club, make friends and try new hobbies. This event is a meet and greet for anyone looking to learn more about extracurriculars at Pitt.

Wednesday, Jan. 18, 8:30 a.m.–3 p.m.

The annual MLK Social Justice Symposium is one way Pitt honors the life and legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. This year’s speakers and workshops will center on the theme, From Surviving to Thriving: Culturally Relevant Emotional Wellness.

Join in community conversations encompassing a wide breadth of justice-oriented topics, including inequity, resilience and healing.

A night of jazz and art

Sunday, Jan. 22, 6–7 p.m.

Renowned jazz percussionist Thomas Wendt presents the music of Thelonious Monk in concert with paintings by Norman Klenick. This performance — billed as an exploration of the relationship between music, visual art and mental health — is co-sponsored by Pitt’s Center for Bioethics and Health Law, City of Asylum, the Department of Psychology and the Year of Emotional Well-Being

Mask making and mental health

Tuesday, Jan. 24, 6:30–8:30 p.m.

Spend an eveningÌýcreating ceramic masks with the team behind , a statewide mental health art initiative. Workshop facilitators will lead a discussion linking the historical significance of masks and the healing power of visual arts. Participants are encouraged to craft a mask expressing their emotional landscape and are invited to display their creations at a future exhibition on Pitt’s campus. The workshop is funded through the Year of Emotional Well Being.

Celebrate Indian independence

Sunday, Jan. 29, 2–5 p.m.

India Republic Day is one of three 91pornÊÓƵal holidays celebrating when the country’s postcolonial Constitution of India took hold. Don’t miss the on-campus celebration, replete with food, dance and a short film spotlighting Indian culture.
